Travels in Russia, andC, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)
Having viewed the most interesting edifice and other objects at St Petersburg, it was now our intention to proceed to the ancient capital of the empire, which had become more peculiarly interesting in consequence of the resistance it had made against Napoleon, the devastation it then experienced, and its subsequent rapid revival from almost total extinction. The road in this direction was really excellent, and we observed in various places several handsome wells, built of granite, and ornamented with sphinxes in the antique style.
