Gold! It's 1892 and a large deposit of gold has been found in the Western Australia outback. Waves of men, eager to make their fortunes, surge out of Perth into a hostile wilderness, leaving their wives, families and jobs. Some women follow in their footsteps, including a desperate Cathy Weston, hard on the heels of brother Tom who lies in the desert, dying of typhoid. In the midst of lawless chaos she nurses Tom and discovers passion with a ne'er-do-well prospector but her family in Perth call her back to a marriage proposal from a wealthy land-owner. Cathy will have to make a decision and live with its consequences! Come with Cathy on her journey into a man's world and experience, with her, a difficult subsistence in a landscape with little potable water. Sanitation is non-existent, food is in short supply and typhoid fever is an unwelcome companion. Yet Cathy, while nursing her brother and later other prospectors, finds love will flourish when given an opportunity! However civilisation in far-away Perth stretches its hand to tug Cathy back to family duty and obligations. Who will win Cathy's affection? The prospector, Paul O'Reilly who travels into the wilderness and loves her as only a bohemian can, or the land-owner/mining investor The Hon. Fitzpatrick who is single-minded in his devotion to Cathy. What will be the outcome of this love triangle? Cathy travels with her mother's favourite maid, Sally who commits an unforgivable crime. During Cathy's sojourn in the desert she will meet Afghans who use camel teams to carry supplies as no other transport is available and prospectors who have come from around the world in the hope of hitting the big time. Cathy realises all this activity is observed by the native aboriginal population who are bemused and dismayed by the desecration of the land they love. The whole population of Australia and beyond is on a roller-coaster ride of adventure. Cathy is in the middle of the mayhem, nursing those who fall ill with typhoid. What will she make of love and life during these tumultuous years and what will happen to her afterwards?
